Today the 27th and last week the 20th DUO, led by Jana, provided a two-hours orienteering training on campus for the second year students of the Center for Inclusion and Intellectual Disability. The feedback was positive (despite the cold weather) and we're grateful to have shared the orienteering love with these students! A big thank you to everyone, both committee and others, who helped out making these sessions a reality! Hopefully we can continue to share in the years to come!

Long awaited and much anticipated, tonight it was finally time for the DUO Beer-O to take place at the Pav in Trinity! Great work by James, Jana and Laoise in setting up the course and planning the event. We sadly have no photos of the evening, but it was enjoyed by all that were present!!
Just a quick notice. Today is your last opportunity to join us on our weekend to Edinburgh! 23-24 January 2016 - Edinburgh Trip with DUOWe have to get going on booking the accommodation etc, hence we've set today to be the deadline if you want to join and you want us to pay for part of your costs. We've got a nice group together so far and the prospects are magnificent, so you might just consider joining as well!
Today Jana, Clíona, James, Ciara and Fiona enjoyed an athletic photo session on campus, filming a promo for the Sprint the Campus Series, which will be revealed later in time by the Irish Orienteering Association. The material was made with a GoPro and will form part of the overall IOA promo campaign as well as our own marketing for the TCD sprint. Keep an eye out for the footage!
Last week DUCAC took official club photos of all Trinity College sports club. Because DUO doesn't really have set teams we opened up our photo to whoever was available and had a DUO top. Here's our best photo!
Thank you to everyone who joined us today despite the lashing rain! Five of us went to Knocksink Woods, south of Dublin near Bray. For a little while it seemed like Jana, Laoise and Julien were the only DUO members going, but then Christoph and Catherine appeared to be on the same bus.
Coach Andrew warned us that the courses were going to be slippery and not of word of that was a lie! There were three courses, short-medium-long. The difference between short and medium was only 400 meters, which made us suspect the medium offered other challenges To spare her knee Jana opted for the short course, and did a great job finishing third. Julien and Laoise ran together, fortunately, and struggled their way through endless pools of mud. They missed the last control and sadly did not finish, but would have gotten 22nd/23rd with their time. Christoph coached Catherine around the medium and they too bravely withstood the landslides and muddy hills they had to face to get to the controls. They finished 29th and 30th. Andrew didn't even bother do his course with all the mud and steep hills and instead helped out others. Thank you all for your efforts, we hope you had a fun day and hope to see you at the next event! Today Andrew, Jana and myself, Julien, went to Northern Ireland for orienteering at Tyrella Beach, an army base surrounded by sand dunes. Last year a strong DUO delegation went there for the first run of the 2014 inter-varsity and thus we went with mixed feelings. It's a gorgeous landscape, but very challenging. Throughout our drive rain came lashing down and it seemed like we were up for some pretty miserable weather right beside the sea. Fortunately, however, the weather cleared and got progressively better as we ran our courses, making the day a lot more enjoyable! Jana had a great run on the light green course and helped out some less experienced runners on her way. She took 86 min and became 6th (35 seconds after the nr. 5). I struggled a little on my green course, but together with some buddies I picked up on the way I managed to find my way back and finished the course in 93 minutes (15th, 36 seconds after the nr. 13). Andrew ran the long brown course in 128 min (8th) and found the course a nice challenge. Here's a few more photo impressions! Thank you for driving us there Andrew! On Sunday the 1st of November some of our members ran in the Featherbeds, a course part of the Leinster League. Bart and Hilary, who experienced this terrain for the first time, wrote a little bit about their experience: On Sunday we went to the Featherbeds with Cliona’s dad John. The trip took longer than expected due to the countless roadworks but we made it nonetheless. It was the border between Wicklow and Dublin and the view, just like the weather was spectacular. We were surrounded by the vast Wicklow hills as we waited for James to show up with the SI cards. After 20 minutes or so our excitement couldn’t let us wait any longer and we finally registered without James. We chose the orange route which was 3.3 km long and had 15 controls. It was the right choice as the terrain proved quite challenging. We fell into numerous holes hidden by the tall heather, but did in the end finish the race after 64 minutes. Needless to say, our shoes barely survived. James did the brown course which was a lot longer, approximately 9.2km long. When we saw him he looked exhausted but he kept going! Overall it was a great day, it was a lot different than the other trips we’ve been to. After surviving the dangerous landscape of the Featherbeds we feel like we can do anything orienteering can throw at us. Yesterday four DUO members took part in a joint UCDO-DUO training on the Trinity College Dublin campus. Participants ran through the dark to various hidden corners and sometimes had to go by no other light than that of their head torches. Some cool footage was made using a GoPro, you can check it out in the video below! On Wednesday evening it was time for a little socializing and what better way to do so than with pizza and a good movie?! Those who were available convened at James' apartment where pizzas were prepared and enjoyed. Seven of us then went to Cineworld on Parnell street and watched the long but great new 007 James Bond movie 'Spectre'. It was great to see everyone and we hope you equally had a good time! |
