Yesterday was the second event in the Sprint the Campus Series, organized by UCD. Despite the cold Jana, Ciara, Laura, James, Daniel and Julien, as well as coach Andrew were present. The courses were a little longer than those at our event, but nonetheless pleasant to run, particularly for those unfamiliar with the UCD campus. Well done to James Haynes who came 6th on a very competitive long course! Congratulations for Daniel on coming first on the short course (again!) and also well done also to Jana Cox for finishing 3rd on that course. Also good performances by Julien (6th), Ciara (9th) and Laura (17th despite an injury) on the medium.
Make sure to check your emails for details on the upcoming events and races! Yesterday time had finally come for possibly one of our biggest events on campus ever to take place, the kick-off event of the Sprint The Campus Series! Results can be found here All photos have been collected and can be found here, many thanks to Aoife, Daniel, Jana, Chloe and Julien for their paparazzi skills! Early on Saturday the committee gathered to set up the tent, put out controls, install the start and prepare the download station, all to get campus ready for the sprint race to come. With three challenging courses a lot had to be done, but with hard work all got done well in time and Angela and Andrew Cox, Daniel and Julien each ran the courses to warm up the controls and do a final check. Jana and Aaron (a great support!) manned the start, Laura settled at the download and Laoise and Rebecca took a seat in the tent ready to register people. Aoife, who was kindly helping us out, James, Ciara, Daniel and Julien manned various posts across campus to help out stranded runners and keep an eye out for safety's sake. A wonderful total of 107 people ran the three courses, most of them in good and (at times) even sunny weather! It was great to see the variety of people joining us, most familiar with orienteering and some new to the trade, some familiar with Trinity and some experiencing the odd corners of campus for the first time. Well done to all runners! Make sure to check out the results following the link above. In the afternoon, after everyone had time for a shower, change of clothes or to pick up a drink at the bar, it was time for part two of the day: the table quiz! Seven teams battled for the first prize, second prize and best team name. Ten rounds of sometimes impossibly hard questions were fired at the participants by hostesses Laura and Jana. James, Fiona, Jana, Daniel and Laura did a great job coming up with their questions! In the end team 3 Roc + 1 went home with the first prize, team Monkey Puzzle with the second prize and team The Trinity with the prize for the best name. Great job to everyone! Special thanks to Jana, our captain, who took the lead in organizing the general Sprint the Campus Series and of course in our own event in particular. She also did a great job as controller for the three courses. Here's her personal thank you note to all the people who contributed to yesterday's success: First and foremost I want to say a massive thank and congratulations to the entire committee for pulling off what has been called (quotes): "Surprisingly well organised" "A really high quality sprint race" "Such huge effort and time went into this" So really well done! Firstly I want to thank Clíona, Rebecca and Laura for planning and putting out controls. To James and Christoph for helping take in controls and battle that tent. To Andrew Cox for updating the map, lending us gear, and helping out on the day. To Fiona et.al for putting the quiz together and running it. To John McCullough for lending us even more gear (turns out you need a lot of gear to run an orienteering event!!!) To Julien for all his hard work with posters, social media and Facebook work. To the entire Cox family, who thanks to me got dragged into either marshalling or photographing runners!! To Ciara, Aaron, Aoife and Daniel who put in monumentous work on the day in numerous roles. To Finn van Gelderen and Conor Short for their work on the amazing promotional video! And to everyone who came out and orienteered! I know that's a lot of people, but it took a huge team effort and I'm so proud of all of us! Some great results from TCD with Bart (our urban sprint specialist) finishing 3rd on the very competitive Medium course with Julien in 5th place. Well done also to James and Christoph for coming 9th and 11th respectively on a very elite-filled long course! We're working hard to get our sprint race and table quiz, to be held upcoming Saturday, promoted and widely shared via social media. Here's the poster we've made and some examples of screenshots from the videos we shot on campus!
January 22-24th, a weekend of thrills, spills and chills. Of sore muscles and sore heads. Of muddy shoes and dancing shoes. We’d expect nothing less from a DUO trip! Day 1 - Fight the NightWell done to Christoph, Cliona, James and Catherine for taking on the tough Edinburgh campus in the dark dark night and especially to Catherine for completing her first event night orienteering event! James was so keen to win, he even pushed Cliona into a wall, dedication and sportsmanship at its finest! Day 2 - Cobbles and WobblesAn eventful day to say the least, with incredibly long courses, several levels (see what I did there) of difficulty, and some very weary finishes. The day began early with members meeting at the airport at 05:00. After a short flight, we arrived in the beautiful city of Edinburgh several hours before the race. After some naps and refreshments we made our way to the Meadows to being our Urban Race. With much confusion at the starts, with some competitors missing, people entered on the wrong courses, eventually everyone made it out onto the busy streets. Passing cyclists, shoppers, locals, cars, taxis buses and dogs (or failing to pass in some cases) we tore around the streets, up and down stairs, laneways, narrow streets and we all made it back in one piece. Every single member finished their course, so a huge well done to everyone! A huge well done to Julien Beuken who finished 3rd on the Open D course, to Bart who finished 4th on Open F and to Cliona for finished 21st out of over 70 competitors! And well done to Natalie for completing her first Urban orienteering event! After the event, we took the time to explore parts of Edinburgh before heading over to the Ceilidh Despite our weary legs we danced the night away, and everyone even survived James’ dance moves to move on to Hive, the famous Edinburgh nightclub. A special well done also to Bart, our favourite fresher, for being the only member to last in Hive til the end of the night. A major major achievement. Day 3 - Conquering Arthur's SeatThe following morning with tired bodies and some very sore heads we made our way up Arthur’s seat to complete day 2. Shout out to Christoph for completing his course in an incredibly speedy 58 minutes to place 19th overall. And well done to everyone who made it out of bed and out onto Arthur’s seat at all, a feat in itself! After some glorious run-ins (see our slow mo videos) we split up to shower and explore some more. A group of us travelled back in time at Our Dynamic Earth before heading home on our late night flight. Quotes from the weekend We all had an excellent weekend as demonstrated by some of the quotes below: Finally, a huge thanks to the whole committee for all the work they put into this weekend. Especially to Rebecca for making it financially viable, our coach Andrew for his hints and advice and to Laoise for allher organization.
It's now possible to register for the Irish Orienteering Championships held April 29th - May 2nd 2016 in County Waterford, hosted by Waterford Orienteers. Some of our members, and in particular our captain (Jana Cox) and coach (Andrew Cox), play an important role in the organization of this major event. Make sure you're part of it!
http://www.ioc2016.net/entry.html Great news today! The first promo for the Sprint the Campus series has been revealed. Although not too much of our own footage has been used, we're more and more excited for these sprints and of course in particular the one we'll host next month on Trinity!
Check it out here! Congruatulations to Conor Short, Ruari Short, Eoin McCullough, Christopher Rohrmeier, Stuart Scott and Andrew Cox for their great runs at the Munster Championships today! We're happy to have (some of) these fabulous athletes running and representing DUO!
Yesterday was the DUO Christmas Party! We had a great night with many of our members celebrating a fabulous first semester with many orienteering events and successes! With mince pies and other delicious food, part of it baked by our DUO star chef Jana, we had a lovely evening with chats, games and general banter. We wish you all the best during your well-deserved Christmas holidays and look forward to seeing each of you back during the new year and new semester! We've got great events lined up, first of all the weekend to Edinburgh and the kick-off on Trinity of the Sprint the Campus Series!
Today James brought Bart and Hilary to Griffeen Valley Park in Lucan for a come-and-try event organized by Three Rock. At the event they met Ciara and Fiona, who also had a run. Despite the terrible weather all DUO heros went out on the course (all ran the long one) and finished. Special recognition for James who finished number three on the long, less than half a minute behind the number one! Hier klikken om te bewerken.
