Early on Saturday the committee gathered to set up the tent, put out controls, install the start and prepare the download station, all to get campus ready for the sprint race to come. With three challenging courses a lot had to be done, but with hard work all got done well in time and Angela and Andrew Cox, Daniel and Julien each ran the courses to warm up the controls and do a final check. Jana and Aaron (a great support!) manned the start, Laura settled at the download and Laoise and Rebecca took a seat in the tent ready to register people. Aoife, who was kindly helping us out, James, Ciara, Daniel and Julien manned various posts across campus to help out stranded runners and keep an eye out for safety's sake.
A wonderful total of 107 people ran the three courses, most of them in good and (at times) even sunny weather! It was great to see the variety of people joining us, most familiar with orienteering and some new to the trade, some familiar with Trinity and some experiencing the odd corners of campus for the first time. Well done to all runners! Make sure to check out the results following the link above.
In the afternoon, after everyone had time for a shower, change of clothes or to pick up a drink at the bar, it was time for part two of the day: the table quiz! Seven teams battled for the first prize, second prize and best team name. Ten rounds of sometimes impossibly hard questions were fired at the participants by hostesses Laura and Jana. James, Fiona, Jana, Daniel and Laura did a great job coming up with their questions! In the end team 3 Roc + 1 went home with the first prize, team Monkey Puzzle with the second prize and team The Trinity with the prize for the best name. Great job to everyone!
Special thanks to Jana, our captain, who took the lead in organizing the general Sprint the Campus Series and of course in our own event in particular. She also did a great job as controller for the three courses. Here's her personal thank you note to all the people who contributed to yesterday's success:
First and foremost I want to say a massive thank and congratulations to the entire committee for pulling off what has been called (quotes):
"Surprisingly well organised"
"A really high quality sprint race"
"Such huge effort and time went into this"
So really well done!
Firstly I want to thank Clíona, Rebecca and Laura for planning and putting out controls. To James and Christoph for helping take in controls and battle that tent. To Andrew Cox for updating the map, lending us gear, and helping out on the day. To Fiona et.al for putting the quiz together and running it. To John McCullough for lending us even more gear (turns out you need a lot of gear to run an orienteering event!!!) To Julien for all his hard work with posters, social media and Facebook work. To the entire Cox family, who thanks to me got dragged into either marshalling or photographing runners!! To Ciara, Aaron, Aoife and Daniel who put in monumentous work on the day in numerous roles. To Finn van Gelderen and Conor Short for their work on the amazing promotional video! And to everyone who came out and orienteered!
I know that's a lot of people, but it took a huge team effort and I'm so proud of all of us!
Some great results from TCD with Bart (our urban sprint specialist) finishing 3rd on the very competitive Medium course with Julien in 5th place.
Well done also to James and Christoph for coming 9th and 11th respectively on a very elite-filled long course!
